Support SE1 United! In its 9th year and doing amazing work with young people in Southwark

“SE1 United is not a conventional youth club […] It’s what the young people have made it. They see it also as a way they themselves can change other people’s lives in the community. It’s been a huge huge benefit to this part of Waterloo.”  Kate Hoey, Vauxhall MP.

Last weekend Young people’s charity SE1 United has marked nine years as a youth group with a reception at County Hall on the South Bank.

Sarah Cretch said that the charity was active in Lambeth and Southwark offering young people a programme of events, cultural opportunities, mentoring, training, educational support and travel. However, funding had recently been reduced due to cuts in government and other public grants.

“Our entire programme is delivered in 2011-2012 for £170,000,” said the chair. “It currently costs £200,000 to keep one person under 16 in the criminal justice system. What’s better value?”

Have you got a story to tell about the place that you live, the people you live with, your neighbours, the community you live in?

Would you like to work with actors and directors at the National Theatre?

Then come and get involved in a six week community project with the Learning department at the National Theatre

The project starts with tickets to see the production London Road at the National Theatre on Thursday 6th September 2012 and will be followed by a series of weekly sessions held at the National Theatre studio on The Cut.

Free and open to anyone over the age of 18

To find out more about the project please come to a meeting on Thursday 28th June 2012 at the pop-up workshop at the National Theatre 6pm – 8pm

Local residents’ scathing letter regarding the way they have been consulted over the regeneration of the Elephant and Castle

Dear Soundings

Re: Elephant and Castle Regeneration Consultation

We are writing to you because we feel that there has been a serious misrepresentation of the amount of affordable housing to be built in Phase 2 of the Heygate redevelopment during the preplanning consultation that Soundings has conducted.

At both the exhibition in February and the Housing Workshop on 29^th Jan the local community was told that Lendlease would be submitting an outline planning application that would include 25% affordable housing. This has proved not to be the case; instead Lendlease will only be building ‘as much affordable housing as is financially viable….’ This is in both the Planning Statement and the Housing Statement (8.1.4). The planning case officer has confirmed that the 25% minimum is not part of the application.

We will not labour the significance of this – instead of a guaranteed minimum of 600 affordable homes this development, when complete, could have no affordable housing at all. However whether this is good or bad is not the point of our complaint – it is that local community has been given no opportunity to gives its opinion on the true proposals.

Pre-planning consultation is part of the planning process. A report on the number of meetings, attendance etc. is usually part of the planning application. This report should now state that the local community was neither informed nor consulted about the amount of affordable housing and this should be taken into consideration by the planning committee. As the facilitator of the consultations we believe that it is Soundings responsibility to make sure this happens.

As part of the City of London Festival, which is now in its 50th year, there are a bunch of golden pianos lying around the city, free and waiting for anyone to come along and play them. Apparently there’s one in Borough Market. And i’m pretty sure i spotted one on Union Street… Anyone else spotted any round here?

Union Press is a temporary and small scale publishing house dedicated to Union Street in South London.

Union Press is an open publishing workshop examining the ins and outs of Union Street and its surrounding communities while experimenting with forms of public production. For a 10 day period from 23 June 2012, we will open our doors on Flat Iron Square from a custom designed billboard kiosk.

A public program consisting of walks, talks and workshops will result in a multitude of publications ranging from catalogs, post cards, posters, fanzines, and more. The Castle: An Elephant Exhibition

A group of artists and designers from the BA Graphic & Media Design course at London College of Communication (LCC) exhibit a collection of works inspired by the Elephant & Castle shopping centre and its surroundings.

 

 

4th Annual Flipside Youth Film Festival

This year there are screenings taking place all over London over a 4 separate days. All screenings are free, un-ticketed and open to all.

The Opening Gala Screening at the Old Blockbusters Video Store, Catford on Thursday 24th May from 8pm.
Rioted Blockbusters Becomes Screening Site for Youth Films “From Destructive to Constructive” window screening until 27th May.

BFI Southbank, NFT 3, on Thursday 31st May from 2pm-3.30pm.
Prize giving to all 10 shortlisted entries on this day will be followed by some refreshments in foyer.

The Cinema Museum, Kennington on 2nd June from 2pm-3.30pm.
Contemporary screening set amongst the memorabilia from the glory days of film.

Closing Gala Screening at the HOrse Hospital, Russell Sq on Saturday 9th June from 7.30-10.30pm.
Lively closing event, screening the festival programme and accompanied by music and a bar in an avant grade arts space.
